I have observed that for an APP ILS approach the defined course setting deviates slightly. For example, the course defined on the approach page in the FMC will fluctuate slightly...up to 2-3 degrees. Likewise the course displayed on the PFD when the ILS frequency is in range will also fluctuate slightly and sometimes does not match what is in the FMC.

Is this a normal behavior or an artifact? I would think the "course" is just that and is not a heading or bearing that can fluctuate with wind etc.

I have addressed this question to some commercial pilots I know and they say the that the APP course is always a fixed value according to what is defined in the ILS approach plate.

Any comments on this?

To be sure....This is not a related performance problem of any kind that I am having. I always set the course knobs to what is displayed on the PFD and all works fine for the landing approach. I am just curious about it.

From my understanding it has to do with 3 things:

MAG VAR (Magnetic Variation) has changed.

Nav Data (Updated Monthly)

10 year old FSX Airport Information (Default Airports)

You can update the MAG VAR files, there is a website for that. There is a program and instructions for a Make Runways and Position Database programs located in the C:\Sim-Avionics\Navigation_Data folder.

Updating after any new airport scenery is added may be required.
