Air Canada

The largest carrier in Canada set out to modernize its training department, in line with its vision for a world-class pilot training program.

Client Challenge

Air Canada operates one of the largest Boeing and Airbus fleets in Canada, with more than 200 aircraft flying to 200+ destinations worldwide.  To uphold the highest safety standards and quality benchmarks, the airline continually evaluates and modernizes their pilot training methods.

A key element of one recent modernization effort was the re-introduction of instructor-led training and the utilization of sophisticated FMS computers. This was to be deployed via in-classroom PC-based proprietary FMS software training program to offload training from their FTDs and FMS devices. It would give pilots the ability to work independently and with instructors on the ins and outs of the Flight Management Systems.

Rather than working with computer screens, Air Canada wanted their pilots to have functional FMS devices, but using a genuine aircraft component in a classroom setting is technically and financially challenging.  The airline approached Flightdeck Solutions to build desktop-functioning devices that would replicate the authentic feel and function of real FMS computers, while meeting their budgetary and technical demands.

FDS Solution/Approach

With a solid understanding of Air Canada’s needs and end-objectives, FDS took up the task of developing authentic FMC replicas.  The effort resulted in the creation of the PRO-MX-CDU as a portable independent training device capable of working with third-party software to meet the unique specifications of Air Canada.

FDS delivered 12 PRO-MX-CDU devices, which accurately mapped to the client’s B737 fleet and equipment mix, at record time. The true-to-aircraft MX-CDUs ensured immediate user adoption due to their familiarity.

Outcome

Air Canada’s training department modernization initiative was successfully enhanced by the utilization of the FDS PRO-MX-CDU, giving the pilots hands-on access to realistic, modern training systems.  FDS CDUs continue to give Air Canada pilots a realistic tactile interface that replicates the real aircraft units while integrating seamlessly with their desktop program.
