The Challenge
As Korea's first airline to operate the 737MAX, Eastar Jet faced expanding training demands while working with inadequate solutions. Their initial attempts at developing in-house training capabilities using basic computer-based systems proved insufficient for proper procedure training for new pilots joining their growing fleet of 15 aircraft, with plans to add 12 more MAX aircraft. External training providers presented significant operational constraints: high per-session costs, inflexible scheduling that didn't align with airline operations, and unreliable equipment with multi-month repair delays that disrupted continuous training programs..
FDS Solution / Approach
Flightdeck Solutions delivered two Level 4 Flight Training Devices configured specifically for Eastar Jet's 737NG and 737MAX fleet operations. The implementation included extensive software customization based on Eastar Jet's operational requirements, including detailed modifications to replicate actual aircraft behavior during abnormal procedures. Many switches are identical to those used in real aircraft, providing authentic tactile feedback. Installation was completed in January 2024, with Level 4 certification from Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport achieved by April 2024.

The Outcome
Eastar Jet gained complete operational control over their training schedule and costs while eliminating dependency on external providers. The devices now support cockpit familiarization, normal and abnormal procedures training, and practical examinations during pilot recruitment. Pilots report the FDS devices as the most accurately replicated simulators they have experienced, with training quality significantly improved compared to previous solutions.
Maximizing ROI
Beyond core training applications, Eastar Jet has leveraged their investment to create additional revenue streams. The airline now operates the simulators for third-party pilots and aspiring aviation professionals, with plans to expand access to the general public for experiential training. The simulators' ability to meticulously replicate global airports and runways, combined with emergency scenario capabilities including wind shear and bird strikes, makes them valuable for diverse training applications.

Certification Renewal
The installation successfully passed its first annual certification renewal in April 2025 under Korea's updated regulations, which have been fully aligned with FAA standards since October 2024. This achievement demonstrates the devices meet the industry's most stringent certification requirements as Eastar Jet continues expanding their fleet to 27 total aircraft.
